B I O G R A P H Y
I am a self-taught jeweller and silversmith from Northumberland, now based in Cockpit Studios, Bloomsbury, London.
I create contemporary, one-off pieces of silverware and jewellery, drawing inspiration from the rich patterns and forms found in ancient art, particularly the motifs seen in ancient ceramics and paintings. My work seeks to distil these timeless characteristics into modern objects, with a focus on innovation and a commitment to high-quality craftsmanship and design.
I am similarly inspired by antiquity in the approach I take to my jewellery, both in terms of design and technique. The use of ancient methods is central to my process, as seen in my work Lotus Bracelet which won the Goldsmiths’ Fair Award in 2024 and which incorporates ancient Etruscan chain making techniques, blended with contemporary design.
Every piece begins with the creation of my own metal alloys, allowing me to control specific gold colours and deepen my understanding of the materials I work with. This foundational process shapes the unique colour patterns within my work. A key example of this is in my silverware, where I have developed an adaptation of the ancient Korean Keum Boo technique. By incorporating my own lower-carat gold alloys, I can introduce more colour and complexity into the patterns that decorate my silverware. Alloying and hand-rolling these gold foils gives me the freedom to create more intricate, versatile patterns that would not be achievable with conventional techniques.
Form is equally central to my practice. Drawing heavily from both ancient and contemporary ceramics, I often create ceramic prototypes to explore and guide my design process. This results in silverware pieces with seamless profiles that evoke the feel of ceramics, lending my work a distinctive, almost deceptive quality—where the viewer might initially mistake the piece for pottery rather than metal.
